5 Design trends for 2023

The world of graphic design is constantly evolving, and in 2023 we are already seeing several amazing trends emerge. Let’s discover together the top 5 graphic design trends of 2023 and how they can be used to create memorable and effective designs.

Let’s start by saying that more and more graphic designers are moving away from minimalist design and monochromatic palettes to bolder design styles, including us at Beconcept.

Y2K style, maximalism, experimental fonts, psychedelic mood and (the now inevitable) AI are certainly dominating. 2023 is shaping up to be a year dedicated to breaking the rules, and we couldn’t agree more.

1. Y2K is not going anywhere.

The nostalgic style of the early 2000s emerged in late 2022, following the 1990s reprise of 2021, and as of now graphic designers do not seem to have finished exploring this world. In fact, this trend has been ubiquitous on our feeds since the beginning of the year, in both fashion and decor, and design seems for now to be aligning itself with this re-enchantment with the trendier aspects of those years.

Playing on nostalgia is always a trump card: the 2000s are recent enough to have a very large audience, and branding in this style shows a focus on the other design worlds as well.

2. More is better: long live maximalism.

Down with minimalism! And finally, too. The world of interior design has been exploring eclectic post-modern maximalism since late last year, and graphic design has been immediately and willingly following this trend, escaping from routine and now uninspiring restrictions.

More and more we see bold and explosive typography, bright colors, unexpected color combinations, and striking visual elements (with a slightly retro flavor). A style that is not easy to pull off, but when done well creates some of the most memorable designs we have seen in recent years.

3. What the font? Experimental fonts and how to use them.

In 2023, the seen and revised sans serif fonts will take a back seat, and fonts will finally have the freedom to take center stage within graphics.

Display fonts and serif fonts will move to center stage as we experiment with how far the boundaries of readability can be pushed while maintaining clarity. For now, fonts with soft, organic shapes prevail, as well as playful ones in a vaguely graffiti style.

As long as we don’t forget the axiom: design in the service of information. Readability first and foremost.

4. Psychedelic to the point.

Gradients aren’t going anywhere this year either, but the psychedelic trend is much more than that. Bright colors, unexpected gradients, distorted fonts, and textures that are simultaneously retro and futuristic. Last year it was all vintage-themed, while in 2023 we draw from the past but look to the future. We like it.

5. AI, (an evil?) inevitable.

Controversial topic. There are those who condemn the use of artificial intelligence as lazy and uninspired, and there are those who think it can significantly speed up the creative process. Text-to-image generators are everywhere now, with Midjourney, Dall.E.2, and Jasper at the forefront.

In our opinion, the truth, as in many cases, lies in the middle. As long as AI expands the limits of our imagination, and if we lean into it without becoming lazy, the possibilities are endless.
